Rebecka Söderberg

In my current position as post doc at the Royal Danish Academy, I work as co-lead on WP 2 in the Nordforsk project LocalCare. I design, coordinate and conduct case studies focusing on how local urban communities and housing projects can facilitate care and social interaction in an ageing society. This project aims to contribute with insights for municipalities and planners who work with planning for inclusive and sustainable cities. 

In my independent research project, based at Institute for Urban Research, Malmö University, I explore forced relocations of older adults through a spatial justice lens. Here, I link perspectives from critical urban studies and border studies, highlighting the intersection between territorial stigmatization and internal bordering.

This research builds on to my PhD dissertation Displacing Diversity: How Social Mix Interventions are Legitimised, Experienced and Resisted in a Danish Neighbourhood, in which I explored residents’ lived experiences of urban renewal. I was interested in the perspectives of those affected by policies and planning, based on the insight that it is crucial to involve those who are affected by urban transformation in the process, for outcomes to become sustainable.

In addition, I am the initiator and main responsible in an editorial group for an anthology about the consequences of the Parallel Society Act, with the title Ghettoloven – Fortællinger og konsekvenser. The anthology aims to reach a broad audience with its hybrid format, including academics, residents, activists and artists as authors. Planned publication date is February 2027 at Baggrund Forlag.

I am part of several urban research environments: Institute for Urban Research, IUR, Housing and Welfare Research Network at Malmö University, and Cluster for Architecture and Ageing at the Royal Danish Academy.

Furthermore, I am part of an international Explorative Research Network in the Humanities: The Blended City as Spatial Imaginary and Practice.
