About Institute of Design and Visual Interaction

At the Institute, we work with all aspects of visual design and interaction through a combination of design practice, academic inquiry, and artistic research. As designers, we experience and understand the world through what we see. The visual speaks to us as a boundless, universal language that shapes us and influences our identity. With the awareness that everything communicates, visual design takes on a special significance in conveying what exists and visualizing what does not yet exist.

The Institute educates designers who challenge conventions and learn to develop and articulate their own agenda through thinking, creating, and acting in close collaboration with the Institute’s subject matter experts.

Together, we build a deep understanding of visual culture, informational needs, and societal and planetary issues. Through our design work, we actively seek to strengthen the positive interaction between people, technology, and nature. Our designers acquire the ability to play a central role in developing new ways of living and acting by imagining alternative and more sustainable futures.

The Institute works with topics such as:

  • Visual culture and identity
  • Data visualization, image creation, and illustration
  • Information design
  • Interaction design
  • Games, universes, gamification, and creative coding
  • Digital design and prototyping
