Cecil Krarup Andersen

Cecil specializes in the structure and mechanics of heritage collections or objects with a focus on paintings. To understand why and how objects degrade, she is measuring the long-term impact of materials, climate and conservation treatment. Cecil’s interdisciplinary approach bridges conservation and materials science and supports the development of effective strategies for safeguarding heritage.

Care2Share project is funded by Augustinus Fonden. It is a 5-year research support grant for the Royal Danish Academy, Institute of Conservation 2025-30 with three focus areas:

SPAM! (Structure of Paintings: Artists’ Materials, Environment and Failure Mechanisms) is a research project funded by Generalitat Valenciana, 2024-28, PI: Laura Fuster-Lopez, Polytechnical University of Valencia. The project is aimed at uncovering the physical, chemical, and mechanical mechanisms behind the frequent and severe degradation observed in modern and contemporary oil paintings—particularly those containing white pigments. https://spam.webs.upv.es/

CRACK (Material Characterization and Crack Formation in Anglada Camarasa's Paintings on Canvas) Funded by Spanish State Research Agency Ministry of Science and Innovation, Ref.:PID2023 148300NB 100, 2024-27. PI: Laura Fuster-Lopez, Polytechnical University of Valencia. Our part in this project is to assess the effect of the canvas on the mechanical degradation in the paintings.

 

Highlights

 

Collection monitoring and numerical modeling of painting in the CollectionCare Project funded by the EU commission Horizon-Europe. Publications can be found on my Pure research profile.

My PhD thesis on the long-term effect of lining canvas paintings. "Lined canvas paintings, Mechanical properties and structural response to fluctuating relative humidity, exemplified by the collection of Danish Golden Age paintings at Statens Museum for Kunst (SMK)" 2013, Advisor: Associate Professor Beate K.
