This project questions not only how we perceive the body, but also what we consider clothing to be. Through sculptural forms shaped by pleats and twisting, the collection challenges traditional relationship between the body and clothing.Clothing is no longer a secondary skin but an autonomous form, sometimes protective, sometimes intrusive, challenging the viewer’s understanding of gendered silhouettes and the visual codes we attach to them.The collection invites a new gaze: one that is less about control, and more about possibility.

Since 2017 the Royal Danish Academy has worked with the Sustainable Development Goals. This is reflected in our research, our teaching and in our students’ projects. This project relates to the following UN goal(-s)

Juryen sagde: Mengjie Hui’s graduation project asks fundamental questions about our perceptions of form, body, gender and inclusion. The project challenges our social understanding of what a traditionally idealized female body looks like and how we stereotype, stigmatize and exhibit gender. 

As such Mengjie Hui’s work deals directly with the UN’s Sustainability goal nr. 5 – to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Mengjie Hui’s collection is fantastically innovative, combining undeniably advanced design with fantastic craftsmanship and a new thought-provoking expression.

Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum’s BALENCIAGA TRANSMISSIONS project

The BALENCIAGA TRANSMISSIONS project was organized by the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum. This international competition celebrates innovation and craftsmanship in fashion design, inspired by the legacy of Cristóbal Balenciaga.

My project was selected as a finalist in the BALENCIAGA TRANSMISSIONS project.
