Based on regenerative principles, this interdisciplinary project between architecture and interior design demonstrates how workplaces can actively give back to the users and the existing ecosystems. In response to widespread stress at work, it rethinks the office as a space that supports well-being. The project turns theory into spatial and practical solutions through a design proposal for an existing office at Refshaleøen.

46% of EU citizens experienced a mental health problem in the past year (2023).

THE IMPACT OF OFFICE DESIGN People spend a large part of their daily lives at work, making offices a key place for impact. In Europe, nearly one in three workers experiences stress, depression, or anxiety linked to their work environment (European Agency for Safety and Health at Work). By applying regenerative design principles to office spaces, we aim to improve well-being where it matters most.

GUIDE FOR DESIGNING REGENERATIVE OFFICE SPACES We developed five principles for regenerative office design, grounded in our research and intended to guide future approaches to architecture and workplace design. The five guiding principles provide orientation in moments of decision-making. Together, they offer a framework for creating office spaces that support people, place, and long-term ecological wellbeing. For each principle, we included specific recommendations for both architecture and interior design. The aim was to translate the principles into practical guidelines that can support the design of more regenerative spaces, not only on a conceptual level, but also through concrete spatial decisions.

CASE STUDY After developing the framework and guide, we tested it through a case study to understand how the principles perform in practice. The aim was to explore both their strengths and limitations when applied to a real spatial design project. We chose Refshaleøen as our case study because it brings together many different activities and ways of using space. The images show colours, materials and forms we identified at Refshaleøen. The area contains many visible references to its nautical and industrial character, including anchors, ropes, chains and metal structures.

Design can no longer aim only to reduce harm.

It must actively restore ecosystems, support the user’s well being, strengthen communities, and create spaces that give more back than they take. At a time when poor environments contribute to stress, exclusion, and declining mental wellbeing, regenerative design offers a framework for creating spaces that restore both ecological health and human flourishing.

PROPOSAL The project should be understood as an exploratory design and architectural approach rather than a fully developed proposal. The focus is on communicating the underlying idea, spatial intention, and potential direction for further development.

Across the entrance, focus area, collaboration zone, work stations, meeting rooms and meditation garden, the proposal combines flexible layouts, circular materials, natural elements and sensory wellbeing. Each space responds to different user needs, from concentration and collaboration to community use and restoration. Together, they show how office spaces can become more adaptable and connected to nature. Rather than presenting one fixed solution, the proposal demonstrates how regenerative guidelines can inform spatial decisions at different scales.
