This lecture, ‘Capturing Reality: The Emerging World of 3D Gaussian Splatting’, with 3D specialist and founder of ToppiNappi Olli Huttunen, is part of the ‘International Lecture Series’, in which the Royal Danish Academy – Architecture invites leading international figures for an afternoon focusing on key international themes in architecture.

Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) is rapidly changing the way we capture, reconstruct, and visualize the real world in 3D. By transforming photographs into highly realistic and immersive 3D environments, this emerging technology opens up new possibilities for spatial documentation, visualization, and communication.

This presentation introduces the fundamental principles of Gaussian Splatting and explores its relationship with traditional photogrammetry, laser scanning, and point cloud technologies.

Through practical examples and real-world applications, we will look at how Gaussian Splatting can be used in surveying, architecture, construction, and cultural heritage. The presentation also discusses the current capabilities, limitations, and future potential of this rapidly evolving technology.
