Community under Bridge

This thesis project seeks to reactivate the neglected space beneath Langebro—one of the oldest bridges in central Copenhagen—and transform this lost space into a vibrant community space.

Despite being one of the city’s busiest bridges, the space underneath Langebro has remained overlooked for decades. Now, it presents an opportunity to be reclaimed as a dynamic public asset.

The community envisions an inclusive, welcoming space, yet the site has long suffered from its highly enclosed design. Previously, its only doorways and window openings were sealed with opaque materials like wood and metal, exacerbating the sense of isolation and oppression.

To address this, my proposal fully opens all access points, ensuring seamless public accessibility. By extending the exterior pavement into the interior, the rigid boundary between inside and outside dissolves, creating a fluid transition. This approach invites people to intuitively explore what was once an inaccessible and forbidding space.
