Bierpinsel

This revitalization project envisions an inclusive, community-run club space for music, dance, connection, cohesion, and letting go. Revitalizing the long-term vacant Bierpinsel in Berlin as an interim space, the concept focuses on accessibility and the preservation of club culture at a time when not only multifaceted club culture and artistic forms of expression are under threat, but also hard-won achievements of people who are marginalized and discriminated against. Responding to gentrification, rising costs, and broader socio-economic, political, and cultural changes, the project envisions a non-profit space that merges architectural heritage with Berlin’s evolving club scene, underpinned by intentional and flexible design interventions.

The Bierpinsel in Berlin has stood empty for almost 20 years, despite growing public interest and regained recognition of its architectural value. Complex and often-changing speculative and passive ownership structures, along with legal, financial, and bureaucratic issues have delayed its revitalisation.

Berlin ‘s internationally renowned club culture is similarly under threat and its original ethos has already been partially overshadowed and diluted. What’s at stake is more than just physical space: a diverse embedded culture, consisting of various artistic forms of expression, social significance, organisational structures, economic relevance and heritage.

This project proposes a spatial and operational concept for the temporary use of Bierpinsel as a community-run club, bringing together the preservation and vitality of both architectural and cultural heritage.

The project hereby serves to activate the district, utilise the building and encourage community building and represents an alternate proposal to the developer‘s plan.

The proposal is grounded in research on the origins, history, and evolution of club culture, its current state, spaces, contributors, and defining elements aswell as history, reception and tectonics of the building Bierpinsel.

How can temporary use contribute to the preservation, activation, and public acceptance of the Bierpinsel - and under what conditions might this also support the development of club culture?

What role can a designer play in this process, and how can a balance be struck conceptually and design-wise between acknowledging roots and peculiarities as well as the incorporation of time-appropriate interventions?
