New graduates honoured with diplomas and grants

Friday, June 20th was a day of celebration at the Royal Danish Academy. Over 240 newly graduated candidates in design, architecture, and architectural technology, along with two PhD graduates, were honored with diplomas after years of hard work. During the diploma ceremony, grants were also awarded from institutions including the National Bank, the Grethe Jalk Foundation, and VELUX.

The red Hall C set the stage for one of the Academy’s most significant celebrations: More than 240 graduates received their diplomas in front of family members and faculty, marking the completion of their studies.

Rector Lene Dammand Lund addressed the graduates, speaking about the outlook and perspectives their education has provided – as a method to continuously see and contribute to the world in new ways.: 

”You have been trained to navigate a complex world by rising above its complexity and analysing it. You find approaches, concepts, etc., that enable you to confidently navigate its multifaceted intricacies. You can bridge the gap between a technical, functional approach to the world on the one hand and an artistic vision on the other, empowering you to infuse your foresighted perspective into culture and identity.

The labour market you are entering needs the perspective you are bringing with you. Therefore: do not waver. Do not be inflexible. But be strong. Inquisitive. Searching.

To do this requires courage. And humility.

At the same time that you are a standard-bearer of your professional expertise, you are also required to learn the language spoken in municipal planning offices, at construction sites, in meeting rooms, at companies and by individuals who may not be familiar with your skill sets and methods, but who crave your insight. Therefore, do not leave your ideals dangling in the treetops. But tread the earth trodden by others so you can be instrumental in creating a different world.. … And if you occasionally feel uncertain, then remember: this is precisely where your expertise is most crucial. Because the world needs more than just solutions. It also needs people who can ask the right questions.”

After rector’s speech, graduates Patrick Amiss Baucum (Urbanism and Societal Change) and Jan-Niklas Jessen and Sofia Munk (Fashion, Clothing and Textile) gave commencement speeches to their fellow students.

Following this, the diplomas were handed out: The two PhD graduates received their diplomas from Rector Lene Dammand Lund, while Deans Mathilde Aggebo (Design) and Jakob Brandtberg (Architecture) presented diplomas to the master’s graduates.
