Is it possible to reinvigorate urban areas and establish potential new wild spaces for nature at the same time?
The project ‘Towards a New Perception of the City – a City Wall of Nature’ is a radical urban-planning vision for Denmark in the year 2050. The project uses different media compiled in film to show how existing urban areas can be transformed and re-actualised, rather than being thinned out, abandoned or left to fall into disrepair.
In this vision, a new three-hundred-metre wide urban and countryside protection zone surrounds all Danish cities. It restricts their unending expansion by replacing expansion with scope for recreating the urban spaces within a city wall of nature. The project shows how transformation can replace expansion. The project studies how focusing on a local area and the existing building stock can lay the groundwork for reuse and new communities.
The project was commissioned by the Ministry of Culture to serve as inspiration for a new national architecture policy.
