Terra Hybrid – Heterogenous Earth Constructions

Uniform, standardised solutions will never relieve the pressure on planetary limits exerted by architecture. The Terra Hybrid project envisions a more hybrid, composite future in which we must use everything we already have at hand, while adding as little as possible. 

We must reuse and mix materials that are abundantly cultivable and extractable precisely where they need to be used. This can be conducive to a more regenerative approach to managing the Danish countryside, retaining and developing our rich masonry culture.

The ‘Terra’ research network examines hybrids of clay soil, unfired bricks and tiles. The Terra Hybrid installation is a Ziggurat, which means ‘to protrude, to build high’. The Ziggurat dates all the way back to the first temples of sun-dried brick in ancient Mesopotamia. It reflects a world of ideas we are familiar with in much of Denmark’s best masonry architecture, such as churches designed by Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint.
