Rhizaerial

Project
Mette Ramsgaard Thomsen, Paul Nicholas, Gabriella Rossi, Carl Eppinger, Konrad Sonne, Cameron Nelson

Rhizaerial investigates how we can design and fabricate using waste-stream materials and how graded 3D biopolymer printing can frame a new understanding of circular and biogenic material systems and their fabrication.

The focus on grading is linked to the ability to vary the formula of the printed material continuously and suggest new material specification approaches that are exploratory and responsive to locally available resources.

The project uses a research-by-design method based on design-led experimentation and physical prototyping. In this context, design is defined as a method of enquiry whereby actors engage in a dual mode of reflecting on and through action. This situated involvement allows the project to connect the investigation of materials to the contexts of architectural performance.

The method foregrounds the creation of design-led material evidence: embodied physical experiments, their technologies and their products.
