Comprehending Biogenic Materials

Project
Antonio Scafidi, Ditte Hammerstrøm, Suzi Pain

This exhibit presents a method of teaching bachelor students the foundational principles of material design through hands-on experimentation with biopolymers.

We investigate the materials’ characteristics, including their tactile, aesthetic and formal potential from a designer’s perspective for application in furniture, products and spatial interventions. Students are not only encouraged to be inquisitive and speculative, but also to embrace unexpected results as potential points of departure for new lines of enquiry. This method focuses on the crossover between scientific and artistic research approaches.

The method focuses on the interplay between scientific and artistic research, particularly on the qualitative results and their artistic potential within the field of design. The experiments provide insights specifically for designers rooted in ‘material potential’ and allow the students to incorporate materials into their projects from the outset, rather than as a secondary concern later in the process.
