About the Academy’s research

The Royal Danish Academy conducts research at a high international level within architecture, design and conservation.

As a research institution, the Royal Danish Academy is rooted in the applied, artistic academic tradition and today encompasses a highly diverse range of research approaches which, depending on the academic field, draw on traditions from engineering and technology, the natural sciences, the humanities and the social sciences. We also work closely with health science research communities in Denmark and internationally.

Drawing on our artistic and academic expertise, we are able to contribute new knowledge through creative, proposal-driven methods, both in the form of practice-based proposals and through experimental and visionary proposals that challenge the status quo and pave the way for new innovation.

Our fields of study have a significant impact on the planet’s resources and global CO₂ emissions. For this reason, much of our research today is focused on sustainability in its broadest sense, and we work closely with practitioners and academic communities in Denmark and internationally on areas such as the climate transition of the built environment, the preservation of cultural heritage, and sustainable design and fashion.

Research at the Royal Danish Academy is anchored in the individual institutes, which are home to a number of research centres and research clusters.
