We have an extensive student exchange network with more than 50 partner institutions all over the world. Exchange studies are only open to students from our partner schools.

Programme Availability for Exchange students

While we offer a wide range of architecture and design programmes to exchange students from partner institutions, please note that not all programmes are available every semester. We have limited capacity and typically admit approximately 25 exchange students in the autumn semester and 30 in the spring semester.

International students are also welcome to apply for Danish-taught programmes. However, please note that assignment introductions, general instructions, critiques, and lectures in these programmes are primarily conducted in Danish. Course literature may also be partly in Danish and other Scandinavian languages. Supervision and individual examinations can, however, be offered in English.

Limited Places
 

Due to a limited number of study places, please be aware that students applying for exchange are not guaranteed a place.
We often have more applications than the study places we can offer to exchange students. It is therefore important that the student demonstrates interest and has a relevant background within the specific study area. We strongly recommend that students tailor their portfolios and motivation letters to the study programme they are applying for.

Please note that partner schools can nominate a student for only one semester of exchange at the Royal Danish Academy. 

It is not possible to apply for an extension of the exchange period.
 

Deadlines
 

  • Nomination deadlines: 29 March for autumn semester / 29 September for spring semester
  • Application deadlines: 1 April for autumn semester / 1 October for spring semester
     

For Partner Institutions: Nomination Procedure
 

Nominations must be submitted by the institutional or departmental coordinator of the home institution, or by an assistant at the International Office or faculty. Only nominations submitted within the specified deadline will be accepted.

Each partner institution has been provided with a login and password for the Academy's online nomination system. Should you misplace your login credentials, please contact us at exchange@kglakademi.dk.

For Students: Application Procedure
 

Following your nomination by your home institution for an exchange at the Royal Danish Academy, you will receive an automated email from our application system. Please be advised that we do not accept applications submitted via email.

Required Application Materials
 

The following documents must be uploaded to the application portal:

  • Portfolio (maximum 15 MB)
  • Transcript of Records
  • Curriculum Vitae/Resumé
  • Letter of Motivation
  • Copy of passport or identification card

Semester Dates
 

  • Autumn semester: 1 September – 31 January
  • Spring semester: 1 February – 30 June

It is imperative that students remain on campus until the conclusion of the semester and participate in all examinations to receive their credits and grades.
 

Language Requirements
 

Applicants to our English‑taught programmes are not required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS test, but they must have a high level of English proficiency.

No Danish proficiency is required of applicants wishing to participate in a Danish‑taught programme.


Study Trips

Many study programmes arrange study and field trips in Denmark and abroad as part of the curriculum. Exchange students are expected to participate in these trips. 
All costs related to study trips must be covered by the student.
 

Workshops
 

Exchange students will have access to workshops, laboratories, and collections associated with their study programme. However, students are required to complete an introductory course in several workshops and laboratories to ensure proper technique, craftsmanship, and safety.
Safety shoes are mandatory in wood and metal workshops.
 

Accessibility for Students with Special Needs
 

Please be aware that due to the protected status of many of our buildings, accessibility for students with special needs (e.g., wheelchair access) is limited.
