Resonance
From decaying wood to a resource for acoustic experiences
This project investigates how we can think and design acoustic sensations using decay wood as a raw material resource. Architectural acoustics have a direct, immediate, and fundamental impact on humans’ health, well-being, and ability to socialize and learn.
We navigate space, understand materials and experience environments through acoustic relations. Relations that we can design. Based on experimental studies, through material experiments, computational experiments, prototype investigations and acoustic measurements focused on spalted poplar wood, the research has produced new knowledge and methods of how we can examine, design, and assemble complex decay wood into the steering of acoustic experiences.
These findings enable architects and designers to develop specific acoustic conditions making use of a material that would otherwise release CO2 in its decomposing process.
