The New Rural - Discovering a new ruralism on the Danish island Ærø

Name
Cecilie Camilla Holberg Nielsen
Education degree
Master
Subject area
Architecture
Study programme
Urbanism & Societal Change
Year
2021

The proposed strategy is to transform Ærø into an experimentarium for a new sustainable agricultural direction. The focus is on plant-based food rather than animal fodder, and the nature is the dominant layer. Through reforestation, the creation of wild nature areas and the reestablishment of wetlands, the strategy will offer an increased biodiversity and enhance the wellbeing of the residents.

The strategy is framed over a 10 year gap going from 2020 to 2050. A new landscape transition, where the focus will be on biodiversity instead of production, will be unfolded over the years. A forest going down the west side of the island, will work as a protection layer. Lowland areas will be recreated into wetland and to increase biodiversity, wild nature will occur between these areas to create a nature pathway.
