The exhibition presents an insight into the artistic methods used in teaching at the Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design, Conservation.
In a world where sustainability is the starting point, and major crises call for extensive changes in value chains and behaviour, working methods such as the artistic ones are important to bring into play. The methods are used i.a. of architects and designers and has the potential to set up positive scenarios for the future, embrace interdisciplinarity, deal with complex issues and involve our senses, so that we get culture and identity involved in the changes.
Unpredictability is a fundamental premise of the artistic methods. Architects and designers learn to choose the methods that make sense in relation to the specific problem they are facing or the experiment they want to carry out. Inspiration is drawn from other sciences, art and culture, or from the public and commercial world. There is rarely an unequivocal solution, and the artistic methods give room for personal and aesthetic interpretation.
In the Making – Artistic Methods in Architecture and Design shows 26 projects by students and researchers at the Royal Danish Academy and a series of films with internal and external actors about how the artistic methods investigate and develop the world around us.
Since its foundation, the Royal Danish Academy has worked with the artistic approach, which is one of three central legs in the Academy's knowledge base, the other two being practice and science.
The projects are selected by a broad panel consisting of:
External members: Founder and creative director Rosan Bosch v Rosan Bosch Studio and Museum Director at Copenhagen Contemporary, Marie Laurberg.
Internal members: Principal Lene Dammand Lund, Senior Lecturer Malene Kristiansen, Senior Lecturer Guro Sollid, Student Elis Sven Philip Thermaenius, Press Consultant Inge Henningsen, Exhibition Manager Susanne Jøker Johnsen.
