Film as Communication Tool: How to Create Change through Design and Visual Communication

Project
Stina Resting

Film is a strong, artistic medium that expands our understanding of the world.

Film is always powerful, but it becomes particularly instrumental when dealing with complex, real-life cases, such as healthcare. Audiovisual media are excellent for clearly presenting a lengthy design process through visual storytelling.

During 2017-2023, as part of the co-design course Design Method & Collaboration, an artistic methodology consisting of a Short Film Format and an official Film Festival Presentation was formalised through artistic input from students and teachers. Guided by 10 Film Criteria, every year, twenty student groups artistically produce a self-explanatory two or three-minute film to communicate their design process. All films serve as strong, digital and, hence, easy-to-share communication tokens of how designers can create change and produce value for stakeholders.
