Extreme Environments - Jakarta
Every year, students of Architecture and Extreme Environments venture to a region in the world, where communities are negatively impacted by present world challenges, in order to propose sustainable solutions for tomorrow’s architecture.
In 2022 the destination was Indonesia, whose capital Jakarta experiences regular flooding from four different directions: monsoon rains, sea level rise, subsidence, and flash floods from the mountains.
The extreme environment of Jakarta leads to various challenges which students aim to tackle in their first semester through experimental prototypes, and second semester through architectural design.
Aim
The aim of the fieldwork is to empower students with the strengths of experimentation, artistic exploration in consideration to site and local culture. This accumulated knowledge and method can then be applied to any context, at home or abroad. Students bring the 1:1 prototypes they have developed in the 2 months leading up to the fieldwork, to be tested on site with local collaborators. Test results and evaluation of the project become a fundamental part of next semester’s architectural work.
Biennale Venice
