About the film
'Star Houses' (18 minutes) follows a group of architects in the process of developing a prototype of a malaria-safe house in Tanzania, designed in collaboration with the local community, in an innovative attempt to secure the health of millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa. Inspired by Asian buildings, the architects develop a brand new type of sustainable home, which takes into account factors such as humidity and local access to building materials – but above all human well-being. Simple, but good ideas, which we see take shape and become creative solutions to something that has been a problem far too long.
About the lecture and the panel
Through history of humankind, and increasingly so from the time when we start to build houses and gather in urban centres, the way we have organised ourselves and designed our dwellings has been influenced by concerns of disease and health. Epidemics have influenced urban planning and architecture has been an important instrument to improve hygiene standards, mental and occupational health and wellbeing, and other key elements of health. Before the film, architect Runa Johannessen will give us an introduction to the historical connections between architecture and health. The screening is followed by a debate on how we can best integrate healthy design in future architecture.
