Students Selected for Exhibition at Balenciaga Museum
Five students from Fashion Design (KADK) have been selected to take part in the project and final exhibition “Transmissions. Heritage and New Creation” at the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum, located in the great couturier’s hometown of Getaria, Spain.
“We wanted to open the legacy of Cristóbal Balenciaga to new creation from the angle of a subject which defines the work of the master of haute couture: Revolution of the silhouette”, says Miren Vives, Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum director.
The project invited students from some of the most prestigious fashion design schools: Central Saint Martins -UAL (London, England), The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (Copenhagen, Denmark), Iceland Academy of the Arts (Reykjavik, Iceland), Shenkar College of Engineering, Design and Arts (Ramat Gan, Israel), Seika Kyoto University (Kyoto, Japan) and Parsons The New School of Design (New York, USA). Furthermore, the Bilbao International Art and Fashion platform (Bilbao, Spain), through its training program for new creators, has participated in the project.
After visiting to the museum and gaining direct access to certain pieces in its archive and the study of diverse digital resources, the 150 participating students set about developing their own research and creation project to achieve their personal interpretation of Balenciaga’s work.
The results of the process can now be seen in a collective exhibition until September 2018, displaying a selection of 26 creative proposals from among all those submitted by the students who participated in the project. Five students from KADK were selected for the exhibition: Amanda Linde, Emil Bang Hoffmann, Eva Valdimarsdóttir, Amalie Vestergaard Meyer and Hannah Sarkez. “The project has been a unique opportunity to collaborate with such an internationally renowned museum,” says Head of Fashion Design at KADK, Ann Merete Ohrt. “Balenciaga is one of the greatest couturiers of all time and for the students to get this opportunity to be inspired by his unique, architectural approach to fashion has been priceless.”
