Towards Situated Truth

Status
Completed

'Towards Situated Truth—Embracing Uncertainty in the Visual Communication of Data' constitutes an artistic research project that explores various paths of inquiry.

We rely on data to make important decisions that shape our lives and the future. Visual tools like data visualizations and infographics ensure data is presented truthfully and accurately. But what if accuracy includes showing uncertainty? What if distorting unclear data can reveal deeper truths?

This project raises questions more than answers. It critically evaluates the presumed objectivity of data visualizations and explores how visualizing uncertainty can aid comprehension and action on complex topics like climate change.

As an initial step, by creating a research platform, the project unveils new connections and perspectives.

The platform displays four research paths:
1) Uncertainty in data
2) Questioning objectivity
3) Functionality
4) Artistic visualization

Each path includes observations, visual examples, and references. The objective is to share valuable insights, inspire, and assist researchers and practitioners involved in the communication of uncertain data.
