Mapping the logistics of building material

Description

The project focuses on visualizing the data related to a specific building project, in order to take a deeper look at sustainable solutions for the transportation and logistics of building materials.

We wished to take on a more holistic approach in mapping such data – rather than looking at isolated data tables, the project collects the data, and links it to specific locations – creating new spatial geodata.

Our case is the first phase of the future public school at Sluseholmen – a raw concrete parking house – with Copenhagen Municipality as developer and BAM Danmark as main entrepreneur, who have agreed to collaborate with us, sharing much of the data we need.

We collected the specific data of our case, pointing out the potentially relevant themes within sustainability & logistics for further investigation.

The data was linked and set up as geodata in QGIS-software, where new and complex data was mapped and calculated via plugins and algorithms – examples such as the total km of transportation or the total amount of moved soil.

The geodata was styled and organized to create highly detailed maps and infographics that helped us understand the whole complexity of the process.

We used these specific data combined with general data and information of the focus points, to calculate and visualize new solutions and alternatives for more sustainable logistics. Highlighting the issues and possibilities, we provided a graphic framework for new knowledge of impacts and information outside the ordinary data table or reports.

We hope to heighten the discussion on optimization of material-logistics, finding smarter solutions and changing the view from waste to resources. This project will aid in creating future toolsets and methods for collection data to be visualized in the industry via GIS-based software.
