Urban Plastics

Deane Simpson, professor in Architecture, Urbanism and Urban Planning at KADK’s Institute for Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape gives his inaugural lecture. 

The lecture will address transformations that have gone hand-in-hand with the revitalisation of the urban cores of larger Nordic and western cities over the last three decades, along with the emergence of the playbook of the contemporary ‘attractive and competitive city’.

As the ‘liveable and sustainable’ city model has coincided with tendencies such as: increased inequalities within cities and between city and countryside; unaffordability; spatial exclusion and sorting; climate change and environmental degradation; growing demographic imbalances; and the ongoing securitization of urban space - how might the architect/planner be positioned to frame and communicate the spatial implications of, and possible responses to these challenges?

And how might this contemporary suite of ‘wicked problems’ influence the tools, training and agency of the architect/planner as a spatially-focused generalist within the production of urban space and territory?
