General Requirements and Rules

Applicants for English-taught programmes at the Royal Danish Academy must have proficiency in English equal to the level English B in Danish secondary school.

In accordance with Danish legislation introduced in January 2022 by The Ministry for Higher Education and Science, the Academy accepts the following proofs of English:

• High school degrees from Nordic countries and IB. See list of required levels below.
• High school degrees from English-speaking countries. See list of countries below.
• Language test. See list of accepted tests below.
  
  

As proof of English level the Academy does not accept

• A BA-degree or similar taken in English
  
  

It is not possible to apply for a dispensation for this requirement, and the Academy cannot offer individual assessments of English qualifications.

Approved language tests and test scores

• TOEFL iBT, including Home and Paper Edition: 83 with a minimum score of 20 in each section.
• IELTS Academic and online: 6.5
• Cambridge English C1 Advanced: 180
• Cambridge English C2 Proficiency: 180 
  
  

TOEFL; valid for 2 years and must be valid at the time of applying. We will accept a scanned copy of the official test result allowing us to validate the result in the test providers database. Make sure to inform the TOEFL test center of our institutional code: 6398. 

IELTS; valid for 2 years and must be valid at the time of applying. We will accept a scanned copy of the official test report allowing us to validate the result in the test providers database.

Cambridge English C1 and C2; does not expire - please make sure to include Candidate's ID number and secret number (appears on your Confirmation of Entry) when applying with us allowing us to validate the result online.

High school degrees from English-speaking countries
A high-school degree with English at the highest level from one of the following English-speaking countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, UK, USA, will waive a language test.

High school degrees from Nordic countries and International Baccalaureate
Applicants with a high school degree from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland or an IB who have passed the equivalent of English at B-level in Denmark, must submit diploma and transcript. Applicants, who do not have the required level, must take a language test.

The following levels of English are considered the equivalent of English at B-level in Denmark:

• Finland
  Ylioppilastutkintotodistus/Studentexamensbetyg
  minimum 8 courses in A or B English
• Iceland
  Studentsprof with 15 einigar in English
• IB
  English B (SL)
• Norway
  Vitnemål with “Internationalt engelsk” (SPR3008+3009)
  eller Engelsk 1 (SPR3029+SPR3030)
• Sweden
  Slutbetyg
  English kurs C (before 2014) or English steg 7 (after 2014)
  
  

Preassessment
The Academy offers preassessments of foreign high school diplomas as well as level of English in order for you to know whether you are eligible to apply or not. You apply for a preassessment by e-mailing us your diploma, transcript and other relevant documentation to optag@kglakademi.dk before 4 January 2024. We aim at processing all applications before 1 February.
A preassessement is voluntary.

Danish taught programmes at the Academy
Admission to a Danish taught programme requires Danish language proficiency at an academic level. Applicants must document Danish language qualifications corresponding to Danish at A-level, either from a Danish upper secondary school exam (high school), or by successfully completing the Danish proficiency test 'Studieprøven i dansk' with a minimum grade of 2 in each discipline.

Supplementing
You are allowed to supplement to the required level during spring. The required level must be passed before 5 July. Please remember to upload receipt for signing up for supplementing or language test before 15 March on optagelse.dk.

- The contents of your documents must be legible, clear and unmistakable
- Your documentation must be in either Danish, Swedish, Norwegian or English  (specific rules for diplomas and transcripts. See below)
- Translated diplomas must be accompanied by the original document
- Translations must be certified
- Name your files in a meaningful way
- Documents must be uploaded as pdf-files

Danish Diplomas
Most applicants with a qualifying exam from Denmark need not upload diploma. Exam results are transferred automatically.

Foreign Diplomas
Applicants with a foreign diploma must upload diploma and transcript.
Language: Diplomas in Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic, English, German and French are accepted.
Diploma and transcript must be signed and stamped by the authority that issued the documents.
Translation: if your diploma is issued in language not mentioned above, we need a certified translation. Translations must be in: in Danish, Swedish, Norwegian or English.
Upload: Diploma and transcript must be uploaded as one file only, preferably with the file name: diploma or qualifying exam. 

Forged documents or misleading information:
The Admission office is legally bound to check the information that you hand in. It is our duty to notify the Danish police and cancel your application in case you have uploaded forged or misleading documents and information.

Pursuent Danish higher education legislation, applicants that have already completed one Master’s degree equivalent of a Danish 2-year Master's can be admitted to a Bachelor degree, a Professional Bachelors degree or a second Master's only in the event of available places. Applicants with a Master's degree cannot apply for a standby-place.

It is not expected that there will be available places in the intake for Crafts in Glass and Ceramics, and thus your chance of being offered a study place will be limited. Applicants with a Master’s degree will be nominated for a study place after all other applicants who do not hold a Master’s degree.

You can apply for dispensation for multiple degrees if you have experienced exceptional circumstances. Requirements and application form you find under Dispensations. If a dispensation is granted, you can apply on equal terms with other applicants.

When applying on optagelse.dk you must inform us, if you hold a Master’s degree and of the number of ECTS-point. Diploma and transcript must be uploaded.

You can file a complaint over legal matters, if you are convinced that the Royal Danish Academy has applied the rules for admission wrongly in your case. For instance if your application has been dismissed, or if your application for a dispensation has been rejected by the Academy.

You cannot file a complaint about professional assessments made by employees at the Royal Danish Academy which means all assessments made by the Admission Board in relation to your dispensation for qualifying exam, assessment of home assignment or admissions test.

If you receive a rejection from the Academy, the last paragraph will address the complaint procedure and deadline, which is usually 14 days after receiving our e-mail.

We reply to your complaint with a draft, which you will receive by e-mail for comments. You have one week to comment on our draft. Comments are optional. After one week all documents related to your complaint are compiled and sent to the complaints board. In most cases the complaints board will be the Ministry of Education and Science/Danish Agency for Science and Higher Education.

If you consider filing a complaint, you might benefit from getting in touch with Admissions before actually submitting a complaint. This is regardless of the nature of the complaint.

Once you have filed a complaint we will follow a strictly formal procedure.

Please note that the processing of complaints often takes time. In most cases it is a matter of months and sometimes several months. Thus it is far from certain that your complaint will have delaying effect in regard to admission.
