Vertical Veg Space - towards a method for integrating vegetable production in the urban fabric

The project transforms an old power plant in Copenhagen’s inner city, Turbinehallerne, into a vibrant, green urban space which combines vegetable production and the creation of biotopes.

Production efficiency is achieved by drawing on current hydroponic growing methods – which reduce water consumption by up to 85% and require significantly less space than traditional techniques – as well as optimising local daylight conditions through spatial distribution.

Between the existing buildings and the suggested greenhouses, new spatial qualities arise, and the public is invited to use and experience the space in their everyday lives.

By rendering nature and food production visible and accessible in the city, the project also takes aim at the philosophical ambition of re-establishing the connection between the urban dweller and the ecological foundation on which we depend.
