Venations – Tree to log dataflows for more sustainable timber

Increasing the use of wood in construction helps to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings and is a first step towards a biobased economy in construction.

Up to 70% of input forest material is currently lost during the production of timber for buildings, however.

Venations explores how this wasteful process can be changed by integrating data collection across the wood value chain, robotic fabrication and new hardwood-based fastener technology for connections and detailing.

A holistic approach allows us to work and design with natural material behaviour, use more raw timber and finally achieve an all-timber construction which does not use steel.

Venations’ prototypes explore how our new developed techniques transform low-quality wood into high-performance building products, reducing the use of resources and enabling easy disassembly and end-of-life processing.

The project is produced within the  research project Material Imagination: Reconnect with the Matter of Architecture, coordinated by the Aarhus Architectural School (Prof. Thomas Bo Jensen) and funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark.
