Abstract

Standard industrialization and numerical models fail to translate the richness and complexity of traditional crafts into the making of architectural elements. This excludes them from the design and construction industry, and limits the making of architecture in smarter and more sustainable ways.

This project develops a new way of modelling a complex craft fabrication method, namely the English Wheel, that is based on the creation of a cyber-physical system. The cyber-physical system connects a robotic arm and an artificial neural network. The method develops a new understanding of Digital Craft that is beyond mimicry, but rather exploring a unique aesthetic identity.

Results

A 1.5 x 1.2 m demonstrator was built to proof the method and explore the tectonic expression of the assembly and marking.

The project gave way to two peer-reviewed scientific papers, to be presented at eCAADe 2018 and Acadia 2018.
