Bornholm is the first region in Europe to be awarded the coveted title of ‘World Craft Region’ on account of its particularly strong position in the field of craftsmanship. KADK’s School of Design has an important share in this.
The title was initiated by the World Craft Council (WCC), the largest international organisation for the promotion of craftsmanship. WCC is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation and is recognised by UNESCO.
So far the title of World Craft Region has been awarded to 21 cities and urban areas in Asia and South America.
It was excellent collaboration and sterling preparatory work by relevant operators and enthusiasts that led to the Bornholm Regional Municipality applying for this very special status in the world of craftsmanship, which no other cities or regions in Europe have so far achieved.
Artisans and creative talents
In August, an international jury visited Bornholm to assess whether the island could become the first area in Europe to be awarded the World Craft Region title based on its particularly strong position in the field of craftsmanship. The jury met with a number of representatives from Bornholm’s municipality and corporate world, and craftspeople – including representatives from KADK’s School of Design on Bornholm.
Then the executive board of the World Crafts Council evaluated the report, going on to decide that Bornholm would be a worthy recipient of this impressive title.
In a commentary, the Danish Minister of Culture, Mette Bock said: “It is incredibly impressive that Bornholm is the first place in Europe and the first island society in the world to receive this international award for superb craftsmanship. Bornholm has an excellent tradition of glass, ceramics and textile and is in a state of exciting development. The recognition also highlights the KADK School of Design on Bornholm, which has the knack of turning out high calibre craftspeople and talented creative individuals. Three cheers for Bornholm!”
